Excavations in New Forest Roman Pottery Sites

Publication by NFHAG to mark the centenary of Heywood Sumner’s classic book

One hundred years ago, the renowned New Forest archaeologist and artist, Heywood Sumner, published what is one of his rarest and most important books – “Excavations in New Forest Roman Pottery Sites”. It records, in a beautifully illustrated volume, the results of his research at Pitts Wood, throughout the Latchmore valley and at Linwood. To mark the centenary, the New Forest History and Archaeology Group has reissued this publication, not in the original form, but as a photographic reproduction (slightly reduced) and similar to that produced in 2017 for “Ancient Earthworks”. With this format – two original pages to one A4 page in the new volume – there are 124 original pages of text, plus about 40 of illustrations.

The accompanying account of Ashley Walk’s earlier history, landscape and current management (by Anthony Pasmore) has been substantially updated to reflect recent changes in management and some important new archaeological research.
